The audience for any given list can range from world-wide to UC
community only to members of a class or committee. In order to maintain functionality, prevent confusion and lend
some consistency to the naming of lists, it was essential to develop naming conventions
for lists created on the UC LISTSERV system. The following provides some guidelines for
the naming of lists on the UC LISTSERV system.
The name of a list becomes part of its email address in this format:
list-name@listserv.uc.edu. Limit the list name to 15
characters or less with NO spaces. They can contain any alphanumeric characters A-Z and 0-9, as
well as _-+#$. Spaces are not allowed and neither upper nor lower case are recognized in list names / e-mail addresses - So lowercase will work fine.
Campus-Wide Lists
Lists which target the UC community or organizations here at UC must
be identified with the prefix UC-.
Examples:
| Intellectual Property Office |
UC-IPoffice |
| Institute for Global Studies and Educ. Abroad |
UC-IGSA |
| Honors Program |
UC-HonorsProgram |
College Lists
Lists serving an audience with a college or other unit must
be named with a prefix that identifies the college or unit.
Unfortunately, there is no widely accepted set of abbreviations for the colleges. Both the
College of Engineering and the College of Education use COE internally as an abreviation
of their college name. Because of this conflict, neither should use COE as their list
prefix. A similar conflict in the use of CAS exists between the College of Applied Science
and the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. We have put together a list of College Prefixes that are now more or
less established on the UC LISTSERV system.
Examples:
| Career Information for College of Applied Science Students |
APSCI-CareerLink |
| Arts and Sciences UG Council Forum |
ARTSCI-UGC |
| OhioTESOL Discussion |
ED-OhioTESOL |
Departmental Lists
Lists intended for an audience within a department must
identify both the college and the department. For instance, a list for
the faculty in the Educational Foundations program within the College of Education could
be called ED-EF-FACULTY. The people within each college are in the best position to pick
names that will be understood in that context.
Examples:
| MA in Applied Economics |
ArtSci-Econ-MAE |
| School of Planning Graduate Students |
DAAP-SOP-GRAD |
| Division of Teacher Education News |
ED-TE-NEWS |
Course Lists
Blackboard course lists have generally replaced course-based
Listserv lists. The Blackboard Course Management system automatically
re-populates course email lists each term. LISTSERV lists may be created for courses. However, the use of
Blackboard for course-based email communication is strongly recommended.
Listserv lists for course-communication must be named
with the college and departmental prefixes. For instance, a list for the
Human Learning course (18-208-835) offered by the Educational Foundations program should
be named something like: ED-EF-835 or ED-EF-HUMLEARN.
Examples:
| CapStone Senior Project |
Artsci-Polsci-490 |
| Economics 183 - Introduction to Economics, Third Quarter |
ArtSci-Econ-183 |
| Human Learning Group A Discussion |
ED-EF-835-A |
Public Lists (Beyond UC)
UC faculty and staff can run lists that serve audiences beyond the
campus as long as the proposed list is consistent with the University mission and the
proposer's university role.
It is the responsibility of the proposer to make sure the name and
purpose of a proposed list does not conflict with lists that already exist elsewhere. The
CataList, a database of all the LISTSERV mailing lists is available at L-Soft's CataList web site.
Examples:
| British Politics Group Discussion |
BPG-L |
| Association of Medical Student Educators in Radiology |
AMSER |
| InterAmerican Conference on Engineering and Technology Education |
InterTech-2000 |
